Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 betas coming next month

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced Monday that the public betas of Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 will be available in November.

Office 2010, the next version of Microsoft’s ubiquitous productivity software suite, is expected to officially launch during the first half of next year. The next version of SharePoint, which allows businesses to collaborate on Office documents, will launch along with Office 2010.

Ballmer announced the news Monday at Microsoft’s SharePoint conference in Las Vegas. The company unveiled some new features coming in SharePoint 2010.

For instance, SharePoint 2010 will include the ribbon interface Microsoft introduced in Office 2007, and will support rich media such as video and Silverlight. Via local networks and the cloud, it will integrate with the rest of Microsoft’s upcoming Office-related products, such as Project 2010, Visio 2010 and Exchange Server 2010.

SharePoint is one of Microsoft’s fastest-growing products. Its customer base has grown 20 percent in the past year, Microsoft said, and SharePoint has netted the software company more than $1.3 billion in revenue.
